Why SciPhD?

SciPhD trains highly skilled PhD level scientific/technical experts from leading academic institutions the practical business and social skills and behaviors that are highly valued in professional organizations and essential to working in a team-based environment. Below we summarize the SciPhD philosophy and approach with the goal of providing an accurate view of the unique value of our candidates.

SciPhD PhDs are have a wide variety of career interests

SciPhD candidates are exposed to a wide variety of career choices, many of which they were not previously aware. The typical cohort of career interests in SciPhD candidates following SciPhD training can be seen in the chart above (right). For point of clarification, “Science Communications” includes a wide variety of job titles including customer support, field applications specialist, science writer, medical science liaison and any other job titles that primarily focus on communicating science for the benefit of the organization.

A Scientist’s Brand is More Than Their Technical Expertise and Accomplishments

The major focus of PhD programs and postdoctoral training is developing and refining scientific skills and accomplishments, which is then measured largely through publications and associated impact factor, funding awards, and invited presentations. Although these skills certainly are highly valued, there are additional skills that are essential to function in a team-based cross functional organization. Thus, a SciPhD “business-ready” scientist has a brand that includes not only their Scientific identity (“what” they do), but also their Business Identity (how carefully and efficiently they do their work), and their Social Identity (how they interact with others). Paradoxically, the peer-review-based highly competitive nature of academia tends to foster behaviors that, while elevating the quality of science as well as one’s scientific reputation within academic circles, can be antithetical to the kinds of behaviors that foster and promote collaborative team-based work environments common to most professional organizations.
SciPhD training programs focus on developing the verifiable business and social identities of our students through experiential learning by emphasizing the parallels between the scientific method (PhD Life Cycle) and Business Process.

Successful SciPhD candidates can verify their competency in these specific areas through experience statements and accomplishments that they are prepared to share through targeted resumes and behavioral-based interviews.

The search results could be in the form of experience statements and accomplishments specific for those required skills, without any personally identifiable information. SciPhD anticipates Flamingo®-based talent acquisition to become available via subscription model in 2024.
