How to get the most out of the video package

These are short focused videos that will walk you through making career choices, provide insights into the culture and working environment in professional organizations, and then, once you’ve identified specific jobs, how to dissect job ads to identify the critical skills and map them to your own qualifications and experiences.  If you haven’t done so already, you should also complete the myIDP self-assessment at AAAS website (see link below) that will consider your technical skills, your interests and your values to make career choice recommendations.

Career Choice: How Do I Find a Job? – You’re ready to move on from your role as a student or postdoc into the real world.  What do you want to do with your PhD?  What kinds of companies value what you have to offer?  Do you want to stay at the bench?  There are many opportunities beyond bench science that your PhD experience has qualified you to do.  Learn how to answer these questions, learn some specific techniques to finding jobs and the factors you should consider in making this important decision.
Life in Industry – Deadlines, Accountability and Working on Teams – Being competitive for jobs in professional organizations requires that you demonstrate your ability to work in a team environment.  That means meeting deadlines, being accountable for your work, and understanding what it means to work in a team environment.  In this video we will look at the practical experiences you can gain between now and when you apply for jobs, and how to demonstrate those experiences and accomplishments in marketing yourself for positions and during the interview process.
Dissecting a Job Ad – Hiring managers or recruiters often take less than 10 seconds to scan a resume. This may be the screening that determines whether you are even considered for the job that you want. So what can you do to emphasize the skills that the company is looking for in a way that is likely to get noticed, even in that first pass? In this 14 minute video, we will show you how to dissect a job ad and map the content into our 24 core competencies in six major areas, and how to use that information in order to craft a targeted resume that focuses on what the company believes is important. This process will also give you talking points about your own experiences with accomplishments that will help you through the interviewing and hiring process.
