Our objective with respect to Team Performance is to introduce and explore a few of the most basic tools to understand business performance. We will be focused mostly on the team or small unit level of performance so that participants can build on their own experiences. Business performance is focused on how we do business and typically is measured in terms of process time, valued added activity, satisfaction levels, emotional engagement, and business strategies – to name just a few metrics.
Project Management is the most important formal process that is used in virtually all professional organizations to turn an idea into a product or service. It is a formal process that manages and schedules all of the resources and applies them efficiently, while anticipating and managing risk to deliver the product or service on time, and within budget. Effective project managers are the unsung heroes in all organizations and are highly coveted. Since project management is so central to the successful running of an organization, demonstration of project management knowledge, skills, and experience significantly increases your value as a prospective employee. Scientists employ project management practices as a natural aspect of taking a hypothesis from idea to conclusion. As such, you, as a scientist have significant experience doing project management. This module will connect the dots between your current practices, and the language of project management so that you are empowered to convince hiring managers that you do in fact have significant experience in project management.

This session is an introduction to assembling and managing a team using communications and delegation techniques that improve team performance through directing, coaching, supporting and delegating behaviors. One of the keys to success is understanding the factors that motivate people and applying those factors to develop a high performing team. We also look at sound management principles that are driven by those motivating factors to establish rapport with, and commitment from your team members.
The four sessions of Successful Communications as a Scientist are designed to get you thinking beyond the technical content of your communications and begin to use your entire brain: the logical data-driven thinking dimensions, the affective and emotional engagement dimensions, and the socially attuned and shared ownership dimensions. One must attend to these “stages of communications” to frame your communications. We have found that using the 3 communications dimensions of content, affective (also called emotional or empathetical) and your social role is very effective in making this communication transition to industry. Using these three dimensions engages the whole brain in communications: logic, emotion, and social affinity.
